April 23, 2007 - To run or not to run...

I had a great meeting on Saturday that may help shape my direction. Basically, I am contemplating a run for the Georgia State House. I spent some time Saturday with a friend who did such a thing last term and won! She was extremely helpful and brutally honest.

So, what are the issues? First, I live in a decidedly Republican District in a completely RED State. What's a upper middle class white boy Democrat to do? One thought was to run as an Independent, that got shot down quickly. Next suggestion, move, ok genius where to? New York maybe :)

Logistically, I think I can do it. I believe in myself and my ability to effect change. Personally, I hope to stay away from the whole RED - BLUE debate. In my mind it's about issues. In some cases I am completely a Democrat and in other instances I have no problem siding with Republicans. Hopefully, as younger generations get involved the idea of true partisan politics will diminish along with racism, sexism, etc...

Politics was not the whole weekend, I am also deeply engrossed in 'The Secret' which right now is a good read if only to keep my head straight. So far, I have not heard anything earth shattering, more just a realignment of things that are sometimes right in front of our face.

The Virginia Tech Massacre continues to weigh on my mind, much like the rest of the nation. First, I graduated from The University of Florida in 1991. Therefore, I was on campus for the murder spree that took place in the Fall of 1990. It was a very scary time on Campus for several weeks. I juxtapose that situation with the media coverage of what was 3 hour event in Blacksburg. I am NOT comparing the tragedies, there is none, I am just noting the difference in media coverage from 1990 to 2007. Can you imagine a drawn out protracted murder spree on a large campus today? CNN, FOX, MSNBC, even ESPN would second and third guess every move like John Madden on what is now Sunday Night Football. We, as the public, need to know but where is the line between journalism and sensationalism? I don't know, but I do know we crossed it last week! The media was so quick to blame the Institution for the lack of a text message? I mean, come on, @ 7:15 what college kid in their right mind would even get that message?

So much for my Dennis Miller style rant...

Last but not least, NO running, we were busy but I blew it this weekend. Rag on me, I need the motivation...oh yeah, no one is reading this yet...

Goal for this week...change both of the above, run and figure out the traffic issue.

April 19, 2007 - Mexico City, Mexico

Welcome to my blog, I guess. My sister has a blog, I have friends that have blogs and I certainly pay attention to blogs about my industry and things I am interested in, but will anyone come here?

If a blog falls in the forest and no one reads it will it make noise?

So, why am I joining the 'blogger nation'? I guess there are many reasons, just like the rest of you: one, it's a great way to hold myself accountable to the things I write. Second, with friends and family widely scattered it's a great tool to stay in touch and let folks know what's going on. Third, this gives me the forum to discuss ideas and receive feedback that is vital in the creative process.

My bio:

I'm in my mid 30's, live in Atlanta, GA. I have been married now for almost 10 years and have two beautiful daughters. I am a Partner in a digital media/communications company. I'm an avid reader, golfer and community activist. I am also a graduate of the University of Florida, so plan on hearing plenty about the Gators!

What can you expect here? What will Gil talk about?

I imagine you'll hear about my life, family and business. My pursuit to get in better shape through running, my desire to enter the political world and take advantage of my Company's technology and communication messaging system. I'll also weigh in on world, national and local affairs. I also love to read and I'm sure I'll talk about that as well.

Ok. Post #1 is about to go 'in the can'. I'm off to a meeting here in Mexico City and then back to Atlanta Friday morning.

Goals for this weekend:

Run 3 times for a toal of 9-10 miles.
Post a message here.
Finish 'The Secret'
